cnArcher Release Notes (version 2017-08-30)

OVERVIEW

This is a beta release of cnArcher, an Android app intended to simplify installation of Cambium PMP SMs.

Specifically, the app aids in reducing an SM’s channel scan list to speed up AP evaluations, simplifies the AP selection from the list of available APs, sets the SM’s color code, helps align the SM, runs a link test and configures the SM’s latitude/longitude and other parameters so that network connectivity can be obtained.

Furthermore, if the installer’s organization is using cnMaestro, the installer can upgrade the device software, apply a configuration template (including device specific variables) and finally onboard the SM into cnMaestro.

The app communicates to the SM’s LAN port over the Android device’s WiFi.  A portable WiFi AP can be used to establish this link.  For reference, the following hand-held battery/WiFi AP/PoE device has been tested with PMP devices (although any WiFi AP in bridge mode will work).  This WiFi AP provides the additional convenience of powering the SM.  https://www.linktechs.net/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=2251&idcategory=305

BETA GUIDELINES

Since cnArcher is currently in closed beta, you will receive an email with a link to opt-in to the beta.  After clicking on the link and accepting the terms and conditions, you should be able to open the Google Play app and search for “cnArcher”.  Going forward, your device will automatically update to any newer versions of the app.

If the cnArcher app crashes, you should see a pop-up providing the option to send feedback.  Always send the feedback.  Please add any comments to explain the task you were performing (i.e. which app screen you were using) when the app crashed).

Please post comments or questions to the cnArcher Beta forum rather than email.

The forum will provide the best opportunity for cnArcher team members and other beta testers to learn from your questions or comments.

RELEASE DETAILS

This version of the app has been validated with PMP 450/450i SMs in all bands except 3 GHz.  For now, prior to using the app, the SM must be running a minimum software version of 15.1.1 and have default settings for the admin login/password and SNMP community strings.  The app is been validated on Android versions 6.0 and later.

The app can optionally be used in conjunction with cnMaestro.  If used with cnMaestro, the installer should have a dedicated cnMaestro login.  In cnMaestro cloud, the installer should also have an onboarding key defined.  In cnMaestro On-premises (not validated in this release), by default, the onboarding key is not required but your cnMaestro administrator may have enabled the feature that requires it to be used.

KNOWN ISSUES

  • The app requires a user begin with a factory-defaulted SM particularly with respect to the administrator login/password and SNMP read/write community strings.
  • [Bug] If using cnMaestro, the SM must not already be onboarded into cnMaestro.
  • cnArcher requires that the PMP SM is running a minimum software version of 15.1.1. Currently, this must be installed before attempting to use cnArcher.
  • Although cnMaestro On-premises is a configurable option, it has not yet been validated. On the other hand, cnMaestro Cloud and the “No cnMaestro” option can be used.
  • When performing an SM installation, use cnArcher to configure the Android device’s WiFi configuration. Do not use the standard Android “Settings” app to change the WiFi settings.
  • [Bug] Ideally, the installer should have his portable WiFi AP powered on when first using the app.  The app will ask the installer to select the SSID.  (A work-around is to connect to any local SSID and then later edit the WiFi AP settings at the time of the SM installation.)
  • [Bug] 3 GHz PMP is not supported yet
  • cnArcher does not currently configure PPPoE settings on the SM
  • cnArcher does not install custom RADIUS certificates on the PMP SM
