How does the AP's Carrier Sense parameter affect radio transmission?

The AP's Carrier Sense parameter may be configured to promote radio transmission success in noisy and Screen Shot 2015-08-29 at 4.32.09 PM.pnghigh-
interference RF environments.

When Carrier Sense is set to Enabled, the device attempts to detect the presence of a carrier wave from another AP or SM before attempting to transmit.  This detection is used to prevent the overlapping or corruption of the RF signal in noisy environments when the AP and SM are detecting the same interferer.  The device delays the transmission of wireless packets until the wireless channel is clear (no carrier waves are detected).  This settings is only applicable when the device Downlink/Uplink Ratio parameter is set to Flexible and the radio is operating on a non-DFS radio channel.  In a high-interference environment, setting Carrier Sense to Enabled can help to reduce system link latency.

Please note that enabling the Carrier Sense paramter is only applicable when the AP and SM are detecting the same interferer (and thus ceasing transmission during this detection).  If the AP and SM are deployed far enough apart that they are not detecting the same interferer, it is not necessary to enable the Carrier Sense parameter.

If Carrier Sense is set to Enabled and

  • the AP is not in mode Flexible

or

  • the AP is operating on a DFS channel

the carrier sensing functionality will not be employed by the device.
