Recently, we needed to get more speed to the top of an old building on which we have some 4600s and some PtP equipment. The building is such that we were hesitant to run fiber from the 1st floor to the 3rd floor as they’re often doing remodeling in the building (as they are right now). We felt more comfortable with ethernet cable.
So, we found some SFP+ modules that are rated at 10Gbps but are for ethernet cable. We used a very good grade of shielded outdoor Cat6-A cable.
We’re using MikroTik switches with SFP+ cages. When all done, the switches linked up very nicely at 10 Gbps. It worked!
We haven’t tried this with the 4600 APs, but I’m wondering how well it would work. Our APs are only about 140 off the ground, so the length of Cat6-A would be within the limits for the SFP+ modules. We’re needing to get more bandwidth/speed to the 4600s than what can be carried over the 1Gbps ethernet feed.
Has anyone tried this?
