AP EVAL is funky?

We have a 2.4 AP with an omni (V pol) antenna. We are using a 2.4 SM as a BH but it has good physical separation from the AP and is receiving on one of the 3 non overlapping channels. (the AP is on a different nonoverlapping channel.) We seem to have far higher jitter in the sessions screen on the customer SM’s accessing this AP than on any of our other network branches; 9 - 13. The only thing I see different than the rest is that sometimes when an AP eval is done it shows the local AP entry on the programmed channel but also a second entry with the local AP color code but using another channel.

Any ideas guys?

Have you tried power cycling the AP and refreshing the AP Eval page on the SM’s? I have seen some strange AP Eval’s also.

Is there any other Canopy networks near your site?

Are any of your AP’s from another tower using the same color code? The SM may be picking up the beacon from one of those AP’s

As mentioned there may be another AP that happens to be on your color code. That’s a little tougher as you need to locate the AP’s owner and convince him to use sync and configure his AP the same as yours.

- DL%
- Max Distance
- Control Slots

If I understand the situation correctly, you have an omni 2.4 AP and a 2.4 SM on the same tower? That would explain why the Sessions page on the AP is showing lots of received jitter for the links from its SMs. During the uplink portion of each frame when it is listening for its (distant) SMs it gets hit with adjacent channel power from the very close SM. (Remember, SMs and APs are exactly out of phase with each other, assuming you are using CMM on the distant tower and feeding sync from the SM to the “remote AP”.) I expect the SM on the tower also has high received jitter as it gets hit with power from the nearby AP when it is listening for its distant AP.

A “remote AP” and its feeding SM really need to be in different bands. If that is not possible, as much physical and spectral separation as possible may help. And perhaps shielding of the SM on the tower. Putting the SM and AP on opposite ends of the 2.4 spectrum may help, but you really need different bands to have a solid network, especially if you want full capacity (want to avoid resends/inefficient link). I’d be curious what link tests show for both the AP to SM “backhaul” link and also the “remote AP” to one of its SMs link.

what your saying makes sense this is the only tower we have used same freq BH and AP on. This is the only site we are having poor service/uptime with. We will change the SM over the next week and report results.
