Bandwidth monitoring with Reports/Alarms

Currently we use Cacti for bandwidth Monitoring as well as the Dude (doesn’t quite do as nice of a job though).

We are at the point where we want to start receiving email alerts when certain devices hit thresholds of bandwidth usage.

I do not believe Cacti will be able to do this.

I’ve heard about PRTG and it appears this would do what we want, does anyone recommend this or anything else?

Strickly RTG no PRTG

See Hear: http://rtg.sourceforge.net/
Real Time Grapher with sub-minute polling. Plus it doesn’t round the numbers like cacti does.
Plus it’s opensource

We will be deploying this soon as well.

Should have mentioned. CVS for this project has been moved to Google Code. Look there for CVS updates. (ie, 0.8.1 and 0.9)

I recomend Prtg. Its a very nice tool.
We use cacti for general graphing tool and statistics, but when you need to find where is the problem, tests, etc prtg is the tool. You can have traffic graph every 2 seconds.

I'm using PRTG and I do recommand it.
You can configure custom dashpanels to view your network status at a glance and you can set every kind of alarms (threshodls, events, ...) via email or SMS.
You can download a trial and see if you like.

Agreed…but she ain’t free…I like free. So thats why we will be running RTG to graph client usage and CACTI to graph signal, jitter, router system usage and pps.

we use intermapper http://www.intermapper.com/ it runs on linux, windows, and mac osx. they have add ons specifically for canopy hardware as well as cisco and most other brands. we’ve been using it for over 8 years now and it has saved our lives many times. well worth the cost for the peace of mind and ease of use.

there is also a free 30 day trial
