Bursting

Trying to decide if I should use bursing. Right now I set the SM to the same for sustained and burst.

What are you doing?

I was thinking that if a subscriber is paying for 1000k x 256k I could set that as the burst and then set the sustained to something like 512 x 128. Do you think that’s choking it off too much?

I have been setting my SMs to 1500 and 1000 both on burst and sustained - I’m not sure if I have any “good” reason to do it that way. We advertise residential rate as being 1500/1000 max - so if they can get that with any applications then go for it (I have a 10 Mbps fibre at my disposal though, so there’s lots of room).

Aaron

The only problem with burst capabilities is that it tends to interfere with VOIP and VPNs, etc.

ah, well we wouldn’t want that.

I’ll stick with fixed.

Thanks

With canopy we have found the best way to compete and yet conserve internet bandwidth is by setting it to the following:

DnRate(S): 1500 DnLimit(S): 15000 UpRate(S): 512 UpLimit(S): 5120 (kbit)

Multiply the sustained by 10, this will give them a 10 second burst, then it will return to the promised rate, customers really like this, and talk good about your WISP. At the same time, it conserves bandwidth.

The above settings are for 1.5mbs down/512kbs upload

That seems like a good rule of thumb. We are planning on rolling out VOIP and I don;t want to do anything that might affect the VOIP performance.

we are going to stick to fixed speeds with no bursting.

We set our burstable rates at double the “advertised” bandwidth. I’ve found that this is enough for the web browsing to feel snappier, also internet speed tests will usually report at least 100 Kbps higher then advertised. But at the same time, it is a small enough burst that it has little effect on overall bandwidth leaving the tower.

A customer once told me that his 384/384 Kbps wireless service from us feels faster then the 3Mbps cable connection he as at work! I attribute much of that to bursting (and Canopy’s sweet latency, and cable’s generally poor infrastructure, but that’s OT).

i am a new user to the canopy. I am setting up a ISP in guyana. South America. I revied the canopy product and look at the Demos i need a equipment like the Advantage that can transmit more than 15 miles @ 360 degree to about 1200 SUbscribers

That doesn't exist.

If you have a clear line of sight to a tower past the first couple of miles, then you could achieve that with a six-AP cluster of units with software handshaking only. You could even do what we are doing and deploy on several frequencies.

But an omni with 360 degrees and guaranteed 15 miles? Doesn't exist.

yea i look at the six Ap clusters i want to setup the cluster on my tower with teh Kit. But to my knowledge it only covers 2 miles @ 360 Degree

thread thieves… sheesh

i need hlp here ppl

Try last mile gear they sell the motorola cylone 120 degree or 360 degree I have only used the 120degree I have customers at 13 miles with a reflector
