Does changing the external gain in the gui of a SM do anything?

Does changing the external gain in the gui of a SM do anything? I know the SM has  built in 8db gain, just not sure if we have to set that or if we can set it higher than 8. Also, how does it work with a dish?

Hi,

This value (external gain) is used to ensure the radio will meet regulatory requirements.

As for PMP Subscriber Modules you can use different external antennas (LENs, CLIP, or Reflector) to increase the total system gain.

In the 3.65 we can only use the dish. So we should be setting this external gain to 8? Even with the dish in use?

No, "external gain" is exactly that.  The radio knows the gain that the internal patch has (in the case of the 3 GHz SM, it's 8 dBi).  The external gain setting would be the additional gain added from the dish. In this case, you should enter "11" into this field.  The total antenna gain is about 19 dBi (internal patch + reflector dish).

Good discussion, please let us know if this still isn't clear or if you have more questions on this topic.
