How SM selects an AP

Hello

If I have no color code on the AP or SM will the SM automatically select the strongest AP of just the first one it sees?

Do you guys normally select a color code or just leave default?

Thanks

There is always a color code on an AP. 0 is the default if you dont change it. SMs only talk to an AP with the color code that you set in the SM. Some people use a single color code for all APs on the tower, some like to put a dif. one in each AP, but that reduces redundancy somewhat.

if two AP have the same code will the SM choose the best signal.
If another AP comes online with stronger signal and same code will the sm’s flip to it?

EG AP1 is best but goes offline AP2 takes over, what happens when AP1 comes back?

Thanks again!

theoretically it goes to what it sees best real time, it didnt seem to do that though. We isolated by CC and freq all our APs and performance is better because the SMs are not “seeing” the other ones

It would be great if the ap can have multiple codes so if necessary you could just add the new code if one AP failed.

Yes, there is discussion of a “preffered AP” setting for the SM and supposedly it is coming out in the next major release.

It would allow you to specify the AP to connect to if possible, (probably by MAC address of the AP), then otherwise connect to anyother AP with the right CC that it sees.

With SNMP tools, it would be easy to write to all the SMs with a new Preferred AP MAC if you had to swap out the AP

But, you are thinking correct in general

Nope, I think it will choose the first found randomly.
