Mapping Tools

Can anyone give me any good sites that would produce lat/long and maybe even ground elevation?

Thanks,
Susie

I use a program called Terrain Navigator Pro and it works great.

Is that a program that needs to be purchased? I just wanted general sites that would provide soem good info. I'm hoping there's a gem out there.

I did have to purchase it, I’m not familiar with anything on the net that would be free,

We also use Terrain Navigator Pro, excellent program. In a pinch, you could use http://www.terraserver.com or http://terraserver.microsoft.com.

Free is tough to come by when dealing with ground elevation and Lat/Long. Someone had to invest in gathering the data....

we use delorme topo quads great profile to determine paths etc $100

In Iowa I use map a free map server at Iowa State, made available with help from the USDA and MIT; I imagine the USGS gathered the raw data. Check it out at:

http://ortho.gis.iastate.edu --> Digital raster graphic (1:24,000-scale DRG)

Chicagoland, however, is missing from this server. A serious oversite. Call the library at the University of Illinois, ask for the map room, and ask them if they have topo maps online. Or simply do the search yourself.

This method does not calculate LOS for you, but it’ll at least allow you to come up with an approximation.

Is anyone reading this that knows an appropriate fudge-factor for earth curvature? This isn’t an issue for the 5GHz Canopy’s, but it could be for a 40-mile 900MHz link.

OK here is my one contribution.

You can get a free tool called Radio mobile at
http://www.cplus.org/rmw/english1.html

Read cearfully the install instructions. It takes a bit to get used to but when you get to understand it, it is wonderfull tool. I like the fact that it will use mappoint to translate elevation maps to road maps and it will calculate links based on freq and hight. I have yet to miss a link with this one.

Thanks everyone! This has been very helpful!

In Canada, the federal govenment released a whole boat load of geomatic data free to the public. :) Since the taxpayers paid for it in the first place. ;) In any event I can get all the data I need for Radio Mobile by going to:

Select your language, we are bilingual here

Help your self.

Radio Mobile is a very useful tool BTW as has been said. You can also install it on a laptop and connect your GPS receiver to it and plot directly to a 1:50000 map or Satellite Image. Makes calculating path loss and doing path profiles a snap !!!
