Never would've guessed this as a cause of problem.

Our customer was saying it seemed as if the power supply for the SM was burned out. So we went out with another power supply to see if it was just a bad power supply. It happened again fairly quickly. We went and checked out the SM (which was a 900 connectorized). Upon opening the case of the SM we found a colony of ants had made a home in there, and that was causing a short. Needless to say it was quite a mess and we replaced the SM and told the customer to take care of the ant problem.

Ants can be a major problem for telco networks too. We had a customer that lost dial-tone on two out of his four lines. Opened up the pedistal and found a huge colony of ants, killed off the ants and dial-tone was restored.

There must be something extreemely conductive about the ants.

I would never thought about ants… Where’s the Raid!
