ping problem

hi,

when i try to ping a SM i have the problem that the ping command give me this result:

Request failed for the first package and give me a correct response for the other three packages…

What can be the problem?

Usually that it means the alignment is not correct. You should re-align your Canopys and see the values of Jitter and RSSI ( http://motorola.canopywireless.com/supp … d=338&c=18 ).

- What is the distance between the devices?
- What is the average response time between them? (you should post the ping results here)
- What are the values of Jitter and RSSI?
- What is the exactly model of Canopy you are using?
- What is the average throughput?

i have only this problem in the sm where nat is enable…

the sm has good value of RSSI (-41 dbm) and jitter (1) because is distance from the ap is less than 392 feet

Don’t know if you are pinging from the client side (Ethernet side) or WLAN side (Wireless side).

have you tried uprading the software?

This is typical in a bridged network. The ARP entry in your router has cleared and the first ping fails because it is used to create the new ARP entry. This entry will time out after a period unless you are using a ping monitoring program which keeps the ARP alive.

On the other hand, -41dB at the AP is a problem.

Set the SM’s output power to 7dBm. After setting the power and rebooting the SM, look at the power level from the SM in AP’s session page. It should be around -62dB. The power in the SM’s status page will still be -41dB. This is because the AP is still at full power, NOT a problem.

AP (Tx 28dBm / Rx -62dB) <------> SM (Tx 7dBm /Rx -41dB )

But if i use prizmems i have the problem that i can’t poll the element…

I don’t understand the question of the 41 dbm… This is the value of teh RSSI of the SM why i have to set the sm power to 7 dbm? It is related with the RSSI???

Poll the element every 5 minutes and it should respond. If it does not try increasing the Bridge Entry Timeout to be higher than the polling interval of Prism.

The AP sees each SM in terms of Power Level. If you look at the AP’s session page it has the following information (key information in BOLD):

LUID: 002 : MAC: 00-00-00-00-00-00 State: IN SESSION (Encrypt Disabled)

The Power Level is the amount of signal the AP is seeing from the SM. As much as possible you want to keep this level from each SM between -65dB and -75dB. This level is adjusted by varying the power level of the SM. If the AP is seeing the SM Power Level at -41, that is too much signal and the SM’s power level needs to be reduced.

Explained another way:
The AP and SM are both a receiver and a transmitter. The receiver on the AP is fixed at -90dB. The receiver on the SM is fixed at -86dB and these cannot be changed. The transmitter on the AP and the SM can be varied. Typically we will set the AP to maximum power, and vary the power on the SM.

SM’s pick up the signal from a single source which is the AP it is configured to associate to. We may have one SM receiving the AP signal at -41dB (very high), and another SM receiving the same AP at -77dB (very low). Because the SM’s only need to pick up the signal from that one AP, this difference is not an issue.

AP’s need to be able to pick up the signal from many SM’s. If one of the SM’s power level is excessively high (-41dB) it can blind the AP receiver from picking up a weaker SM’s signal (-77dB). You would want to lower the output power on the SM that has the higher signal so that it’s signal at the AP is closer to the weaker SM’s power level.

Take a look at the following AP’s session page. Notice that the Power Level for each SM is fairly close to the target of -65 to -75dB even though the SM’s range from 1.6 miles to over 15 miles. This was acheived by lowering the output of the closer SM’s and leaving the 15 mile SM’s at full power. We also use lower gain antennas for the closer SM’s and higher gain antennas for the distant SM’s.

thanks a lot for the suggestions.

I have put the output power level at 7 dbm but the RSSI is now around -51 dbm.
have I still to modify the output power on the sm?

-51 is better than -41.

You could probably live with this until you get to about 20 users on that AP, and then your more distant users will start dropping off. I would put a low gain indoor antenna (6-8dB) in the house - the walls should give you another 10dB of loss putting that SM around -60dB.

If you get jiter of 7-8 while traffic is passing through, that is OK. Better to have that one SM with slightly higher jitter than to adversely affect the rest of your users.

Jerry

but i can modify the output power on the SM and put it less than 7 dBm?

isn’t that a 900? 7dB is as low as you can go.

If it’s a newer 2400 I think you can go even lower

it is a 5400

Does it have a reflector? If it does, take it off.

I have not used the 5400, but I assume its the same software so you should be able to lower the power to 2-3 dB.

it hasn’t reflector…

now i put the out power to 4 dbm and i have a RSSI of -58dbm…

thanks thanks

Power is measured in dBm…
