With the new PTP 550 being released, what are the various options for GPS sync that can be used with them? Currently Mimosa B5C has GPS built in using GNSS-1 (GPS + GLONASS) to allow 1PPS GPS TX/RX synchronization for collocated co-channel radios.

Hi,

PTP550 will support Cambium Sync from CMM5.

Thank you.

So GPS sync is only capable through the power (PSU) port as the only other port it has is the SFP port.

TDD sync support will be in future release.

The way it works is Cambium Sync, basically take the sync through PSU port using CMM5.

Allen

Would also be nice to see IEEE 1588v2 PTP support on the 550 at some point.

The PTP550 will not support 1588 or SyncE by current platform, the product is focusing on WISP and enterprise market, rather than for small cell backhaul.

The PTP670 line is our high tier BH target for carrier small cell backhaul, it support both 1588 and Sync-E today. We also have hundreds of PTP670 served by Tier1/2 carrier customers worldwide for small cell backhaul.

The original question was about TDD synchronization options in PTP 550. Allen mentioned that this is implemented using Cambium sync with the CMM5.

Allen also mentioned that PTP 670 can be used in a network where a remote system (such as a small cell base station) is synchronized with an IEEE 1588 master in the core network. A network like this takes advantage of the PTP 670 configured as an IEEE 1588 Transparent Clock, or as a Synchronous Ethernet relay.

We should probaby point out that, at present, it is not possible to synchronize the PTP 670 TDD frame rate with an external IEEE 1588 master clock.

Hi Bruce

Can you tell me the way to sync 2 PTP550 with CnPulse?. I´ve just seen in the draws PTP550 and PTP/PMP450i but not with 2 PTP550.

Thanks

For PTP 550, the deployment model is one cnPulse per PTP 550 master. There isn't currently a way to provide sync to two PTP 550's from one cnPulse model. - Bruce

What is the CambiumSYNC physical layer signal which is able to provide sync to the PTP 550?

Is it a standardized method to provide PPS (Pulse Per Second) signal over Ethernet (e.g. GbE) interface?

CambiumSYNC is a physical layer signal that 'induces' a 1PPS pulse on the drop cable without impacting the Gigabit Ethernet connection. It requires a special hardware decoder in the radio and is not based on a standard.

The earlier technique sometimes referred to a CanopySYNC 'breaks' the connection at a 1PPS rate. This technique can cause packet loss on Gigabit Ethernet connections so is not recommend on 1000BaseT interfaces.

I like to use the analogy that CambiumSYNC plucks the string every second where CanopySYNC cuts the string every second.
