RSSI/SNR substantial drop

Hi Just looking for some insight. Have 2 subscribers with a strange occurrence… one SM had no change in downlink RSSI and SNR but the uplink RSSI and SNR tanked, RSSI went from -60 to -76. The other SM had both downlink and uplink RSSI and SNR, it went from -64/-60 to -69/-78… no real rhyme or reason to this as far as I can see.

This is radio troubleshooting 101. Assuming that the other subscribers on the AP’s signal quality has not changed, then you’ll need to focus your troubleshooting efforts on the two clients. A physical visit will most likely be needed to:

  • Check the alignment
  • Check for new sources of attenuation (like trees starting to bloom, an RV parked in the way, etc)
  • If the clients are using connectorized radios, check the jumper cables, check for water
  • If all the above fails, try a new radio or known working radio

Check alignment - Do not think I’ll have to, today, opposed to yesterday, the signals are now -66/-65 with 25/24 for SNR and 61/60 with 30/30 SNR.

Check for new sources of attenuation - These are not factors, the one client I installed last week, no trees… the other client was last year and no trees in LOS.

If the clients are using connectorized radios - using Force 300 25 integrated

  • If all the above fails, try a new radio or known working radio - will definitely try but hesitant based on todays stats… could this still be a sign of a bad radio?

Your description and the resolution sounds like thermal ducting. No it doesnt have to be hot for this to happen it can happen anytime there is a fast temperature shift. Not saying this is the culprit but 300% signal loss with no known cause then back to normal a day later is usually thermal ducting.

Terribly sorry for the late reply. Yes thermal ducting was considered in all of this and as you said was most likely the culprit… will continue to monitor. Thank you again.
