Troubleshooting an IDLE SM

what is the things to troubleshoot when you have a IDLE SM on the Tower

so far I have this?

1. Unplug the SM (Motorola Adapter) for about 5 minutes

2. Ask the customer to power off/power on his computer

3. Ask if the customer if has a router and ask him to unplug it and to have it power it off and plug the SM’s ethernet cable directly into the computer’s Ethernet Card

4. Ask the customer if he as any wireless devices…cordless phones, wireless alarm clocks, wireless routers …etc)

5. Check if the customer is using a VOIP phone system

6. Refresh Canopy

7. Confirm MAC address

8. Verify the RSSI/Jitter/Power Level results for interference

9. If still idle - Troubleshoot the Network

is anything to add to my list?

MAC: 0a-00-3e-24-00-7b State: IDLE
Session Timeout: 0, AirDelay 192 (approximately 1.78 miles (9408 feet))
Session Count: 1357, Reg Count 2733, Re-Reg Count 8469
RSSI (Avg/Last): 763/0 Jitter (Avg/Last): 10/0 Power Level (Avg/Last): -78/-95
DnRate(AP): 300 DnLimit(AP): 1500 UpRate(AP): 150 UpLimit(AP): 300 (kbit)

Your list is fine, but this looks like RF problem at all (Power level at -78dBm.....hmmm). It should work but in clean RF environment. And secondly, the Re-Reg count is too high IMHO. You should do a Spectrum analysis at the SM at least.

Wireless alarm clocks? I’ve never heard of those? Anything more specific on that?

Marwill is correct, that is a weak signal. You need to get another 3-6dB of gain on the SM side.

what is the normal numbers, I mean the recommended settings
for a 900MHZ SM,

RSSI?
Jitter?
Power Level?
Reg Count?

How do I fix a weak signal? You need to get another 3-6dB of gain on the SM side… How?
Power level at -78dBm…hmmm is that number ok?

Higher Gain Antenna at the customer end

The level depends on the noise floor in your area but generally -75 or better.
