There is a disparity between cnMaestro cloud and Cambium Support Download for recommended firmware choice. Which version should be chosen when this occurs?
Cambium Support Download shows the latest for ePMP 4k as 5.11.1, anything else would have to be accessed from “Archive”:
If I try to upgrade from within the WebUI, I am also shown 5.11.1 as if it is fine to use. Why does cnMaestro “Recommend” an older version? I have seen this issue many times and would like to better understand it.
So the cnMaestro “recommended” firmware typically covers the most platforms and is best for general/conservative deployment needs. For operators that don’t want to push out every little incremental update that they probably won’t benefit from.
Sometimes there will be a slightly newer version above recommended, which provides more bleeding edge features OR in the case of 5.11.1, only provides a fix for a specific new radio, the F4518, so it really doesn’t make sense to push it out to your entire network.
At some point there will be a more substantial release that will fold in the fix from 5.11.1 and any other subsequent minor releases, and then that will most likely become the “recommended” build.
As to what the radio mgmt GUI suggests to download, it’s going to always grab the newest version because it’s under the assumption that the reason you’re manually checking an individual radio for an update is because it has an old crusty firmware or you’re dealing with with some specific issue, or need a feature (like proper signal reporting in the F4518) so it’s best to just update to the newest release.
So cnMaestro definitely has recommended firmware images for every platform, as shown in the screen shot in the OP. Maybe you’re thinking of the Administration → Settings → Software Images section of cnMaestro where you can specify what firmware image is applied when new devices are onboarded?
