How to form a link in the lab setup for PTP 670 unlicensed? (minimum configuration required)

How to form a link in the lab setup for PTP 670 unlicensed (minimum configuration required)

Summary:

This document will explain the requirements and minimum configuration to form a PTP 670 link in a lab setup.

To establish a PTP 670 link in a lab setup we recommend to use bench setup kit. We can use the kits for bench testing, system staging before a radio is installed on a tower, troubleshooting in the lab, or setup for PTP 820 for classroom training. Below is how the setup will look.

Cause:

When we need to test the units in a lab before installing them in the field to confirm the hardware status and see if the configuration is correct.

Solution:

The document explains the step by step configuration required to establish a link between two PTP 670 units in a lab setup.

Brief Summary of Steps:

  • Connect both the PTP 670 units using the bench test kit.
  • Power on the unit, connect the LAN port of POE Injector to your laptop and change the Ethernet IP address of the laptop to 169.254.1.10 and the subnet mask to 255.255.0.0.
  • Open a web browser and login into the web interface of the unit with 254.1.1(default IP)
  • The login page is displayed with Password only (the default) or with Username and Password (if identity-based user accounts have been enabled)
  • Use the installation report to determine which configuration options are required. Refer to your LINKPlanner file.
  • Open the installation wizard, apply the license key and configure the unit as planned.

STEPS to configure the minimum configuration to form a link between two PTP 670 radios in a lab setup.

Power ON the unit.

Power ON the PTP 670 unit with the cambium recommended power supply. If using a third-party power supply, you may experience continuous reboot issues due to different power consumption ratings.

Once the unit is powered on, connect the PC Ethernet port to the LAN port of the PSU using a standard (not crossed) Ethernet cable. Apply mains or battery power to the PSU. The green Power LED should illuminate continuously. After about 45 seconds, check that the orange Ethernet LED starts with 10 slow flashes. Check that the Ethernet LED then illuminates continuously.

Once the laptop detects the Ethernet connection, open the network and sharing center to change the IP address of the laptop. (Refer below screen shots).

Open network and sharing center> Click on change adapter options/settings.

Software License Key page

Use this page to configure the unit with a new License Key and to review the capabilities of an installed License Key. The appearance of this page varies depending upon which capabilities are enabled by the entered license key.

To enter a new License Key, proceed as follows:

  • To clear the existing License Key (if present), click Clear.
  • To format the new License Key: copy it from the Cambium notification email, paste it into the License Key box and click Format. The page is redisplayed with the License Key formatted.
  • To enter the new License Key, click Submit. The page is redisplayed with the Capability Summary updated. To continue with the Installation Wizard, click next

Wireless Topology Configuration page

Under this tab we configure Wireless Topology and Master Slave Mode. The HCMP option is only available if enabled in the license key.

  • Review and update the Wireless Topology.
  • Review and update the Master Slave Mode (One side should be Master and the other as Slave)

Interface Configuration page

Under this tab we configure the IP interface attributes.

  • Review and update the IP and VLAN attributes.
  • To continue with the Installation Wizard, click Next or Submit Interface Configuration.

Note: Before configuring a VLAN for management interfaces, ensure that the VLAN is accessible, otherwise the unit will be inaccessible after the next reboot. If you are not using VLAN then select No VLAN Tagging.

A valid IP address and subnet mask is required before the PTP unit can be used on a network. Please see your network administrator if you are unsure of the correct values to enter here.

Management Configuration page

We use this tab to configure the cnMaestro device agent for connection to a cnMaestro server.

If you want to onboard this on cnMaestro then select Enable otherwise Disable.

Wireless Configuration page:

We use this tab to update the wireless attributes

  • Update the attributes
  • To save any changes and continue with the Installation Wizard, click next or click Submit Wireless Configuration.

  • Under wireless topology page we have selected the wireless topology as point to point.
  • When configuring a linked pair of units, use the Master Slave Mode to ensure that one unit is Master and the other is Slave.

Access Method:

ODUs must be configured in pairs before a link can be established. Access Method determines how paired ODUs will recognize each other. Select any one of the access methods.

  • Link Access: Each ODU must be configured with Target MAC Address equal to the MAC Address of the other unit.
  • Link Name Access: Both ODUs must be configured with the same Link Name.
  • Group Access: Only displayed when a Group Access license key has been generated. Group Access is the only Access Method supported in the HCMP topology.
  • Here for lab setup you can select Link Access method and enter the MAC address of the remote radio (Slave) under Target MAC Address. And similarly enter the MAC address of master on the slave side.

Dual Payload:

If Disable, The link maximizes robustness against fading and interference.

If Enabled, The link attempts to reach maximum throughput at the expense of robustness against fading and interference.

It should be the same on both master and the slave radio.

Max Receive Modulation Mode: By default the Max Receive Modulation Mode is the highest mode available. Set it as per planning and should be the same on both master and the slave radio.

Lowest Data Modulation Mode: Set it to the lowest value (BPSK).

Link Mode Optimization: Select it as IP Traffic, this means the link is optimized for IP traffic to provide the maximum possible link capacity. TDM Traffic option is only available when TDM is enabled. It should be the same on both master and the slave radio.

TDD Synchronization Mode: Select disabled if not using TDM synchronization.

Regulatory Band: The regulatory band selected from the list in the license key. Select the regulatory band as per planning. It should be the same on both master and the slave radio.

Channel Bandwidth: Select the channel bandwidth you want to configure. (45, 40, 30, 20, 15, 10, 5). Higher bandwidth will give higher throughput. It should be same on both master and the slave radio.

Link Symmetry: This option is available only on the master side when Wireless Topology is set to Point To Point. 5 to 1, 3 to 2, 2 to 1, 1 to 1, 1 to 5, 1 to 3, 1 to 2

The first number in the ratio represents the time allowed for the transmit direction and the second number represents the time allowed for the receive direction.

For example, if Link Symmetry is set to “2 to 1” at the master ODU, then the slave ODU will be set automatically as “1 to 2”. In this example, the master-slave direction has double the capacity of the slave master direction.

Spectrum Management Control: Select the mode as per planning (DSO or Fixed). It should be the same on both master and the slave radio.

Extended Spectrum Scanning: Enables scanning of the entire frequency spectrum supported by the device (4700 MHz to 5875 MHz, or 4900 MHz to 6050 MHz). Here in a Lab setup we can set it as Disable. It should be same on both master and the slave radio.

Lower Center Frequency: Select the lower center frequency as per the planning. It should be same on both master and the slave radio.

Default Raster: This is only displayed when Spectrum Management Control is set to Fixed Frequency. Limits frequency selection to the unit’s default raster setting. Set it as OFF.

Fixed Tx Frequency, Fixed Rx Frequency: This is only displayed when Spectrum Management Control is set to Fixed Frequency. The settings must be compatible at each end of the link. Once configured, the spectrum management software will not attempt to move the wireless link to a channel with lower co-channel or adjacent channel interference. Therefore this mode of operation is only recommended for deployments where the installer has a good understanding of the prevailing interference environment.

Tx Color Code, Rx Color Code: Cambium Networks recommend that Tx Color Code and Rx Color Code are left at the default value of A. The value of Tx Color Code MUST always match the value of Rx Color Code at the other end of the link.

Antenna Gain: Only displayed for a Connectorized ODU. Gain of the remote antenna

Cable Loss: Only displayed for a Connectorized ODU. Loss in the ODU-antenna RF cable. If there is a significant difference in length of the RF cables for the two antenna ports, then the average value should be entered.

Maximum Transmit Power: The maximum power (dBm) at which the unit will transmit. Set the value to the lowest as we are forming a link in a lab setup.

ATPC Peer Rx Max Power: This attribute is only displayed if:

  • The unit is in PTP topology
  • The operating regulatory band does not require radar detection. Set this attribute to the maximum receive power the ATPC mechanism must try to achieve at the peer unit.

Installation mode: Select the installation mode as “arm with tones” while forming a link, once the link is formed change it to “Change config without arming”. It should be same on both master and the slave radio.

Ranging Mode: Select it according to the distance between the Master and the slave.

Once this is done click on next and “confirm configuration and Reboot”.

This will reboot the unit and it will come back in 1-2 minutes.

Now repeat the configuration steps on the slave radio and confirm. Cross check the parameters and reboot the unit.
