Hi, I am in Oz and am just resurrecting a 900mhz canopy that has been abandoned by it’s previous owners.
The short story is that I was one of the customers that has no other alternative but wireless so when the gear I was receiving my signal from was abandoned I resurrected it and am now trying to learn how to make it all work.
I’m gunna have lots of questions but this is my first one:)
some of the SMs have 8.2.4 software and others have 7.2.9 where do I fine the newer software and is it free .
If it isn’t free where do I goto pay for it and how do I get it and install it.
Please answer is simple language as I’m experiencing a super steep learning curve
i believe the software is no longer free, and you have to have a support contract with motorola.
i find it odd somebody would just “abandon” several thousand dollars worth of equipment…
What happened here a couple of years ago wa that our Government gave grants to People/Companies to establish broadband services to people in country areas, these people were required to supply free access to their customers for 18mths, unfortunatly there were insufficent customers to be profitable once the grant money ran out, also in the mean time our biggest telco rolled out much better wireless BB and connected many more areas to ADSL making the private wireless services less profitable, at the time of turning off the tower that I was on there were only 3 users and the service was very unrelyable as the owner hadn’t been paying their suppliers for their services.
I currently have NO paying customers but am hopefull of getting enough to cover running costs once I can provide a reliable service, which it isn’t at the moment:(
Which brings me back to my first question.
How do I go about getting the updated suftware?
I would start by reading the Canopy user manual. I would also read through this forum multiple times over. There are so many things we can’t just supply blanket answers for you. You should be looking into wireless technology and new upcoming standards. To answer your question directly you need to purchase a 1 year license from motorola. You can phone them directly by finding a number on www.motorola.com
The most current version is 8.2.7 which is getting favorable reviews.
You can also try visiting http://motorola.motowi4solutions.com/software/#bpl and putting in the mac address of some of your radios. Maybe they already have a license available on them.
Thanks for that RyanR,
Plase dont shout at me but where do I find the MAC address of my radios.
Sorry to be a pain:(
beeVee,
Greetings. Fellow WISP from Arkansas, USA
The MAC is on a sticker on the back of the SMs, or if you can access their web interface, it is on the main menu screen.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for the greeting Jakkwb
Also thanks for letting me know where the Mac address is.
I have been able to download some software as follows, do you think this is what I need:-
CANOPY824BUILD_DES.pkg2
CANOPY824BUILD_AES.pkg2
CMM_22.pkg2
I was also able to download this updater tool, I hope it’s the right one.
setupCNUT_2_20_r1
Becoz someone told me I’d need it to install the updates.
I haven’t got a users manual as in a hard copy but I guess I should be able to download one

I think you can install the DES version CANOPY824BUILD_DES.pkg2 (it actually depends on the hardware version, AES have different encryption mostly used by government agencies).
It would be better to upgrade to 8.2.7 but in this case you must download CNUT rel. 3.x
About the user manual, you can look here:

Thanks for that link Big Trumpet
489 pages of reading Woooowwww that’ll keep me busy for a while
Never mind I have been able to pick out areas to read that are very helpfull.
Again Thanks Big Trumpet
Any ideas why I cant get back into an AP after I set it up using the Quick Start feature.
Did you change the IP address or set the network access to Local or Public on the IP Configuration page?
Did you change the IP address or set the network access to Local or Public on the IP Configuration page?
I left it on Local and changed the IP address
What should I have done?????
I got it working today by leaving everything as set in the factory on the SM I'm trying to send to and I changed the IP on the AP to 169.254.0.1
I'm guessing this isn't the ideal way to go but atleast it is now working.
Any constructive suggestions will be taken onboard, coz I really do appreciate your help.
By default all SM’s and AP’s are on 169.254.1.1 with a subnet of 255.255.0.0 which means anything ip will work from 169.254.x.x but be sure you have your router/network card set in the same subnet or else you lose access. If you are accessing across the network(remotely) and not plugged in directly you need to set the the network access to public. It doesnt mean you need to use a pulic ip address. 169.254.x.x is in the private ip class range and can just be used for management.
