Software version can be selected before a device is onboarded in the onboarding view (Operate -> Onboard). The icons in the Configure column link to this selection. This will cause the device to be upgraded when it is onboarded automatically.
Operate -> Software Upgrade controls software upgrade for devices which can be done for a large number of devices at a time. The Help link at the bottom of cnMaestro has a section on this and there is an Overview video here. It is old so labels and button locations may be different but the basic flow is the same.
