There are two perspectives of RSSI in wireless networking:
- What the client “sees” → This reflects the signal strength of the Access Point (AP) as measured by the client device. <- We want
- What the AP “sees” → This represents the signal strength of the client device as received at the AP.
While the AP can already report the RSSI of client devices (via the RadioTap Header or other telemetry), it would be incredibly valuable if Cambium Networks could also capture and display client-reported RSSI of the AP.
We propose that Cambium Networks explore integration with larger vendors (e.g., Microsoft, Apple) to fetch client-side metrics such as the RSSI of the AP as perceived by the client. This could be achieved through custom frame fields or Vendor-Specific Capabilities that allow the client to report this information back to the AP or controller.
Value Proposition:
By capturing and displaying client-reported RSSI metrics, Cambium Networks can align with larger vendors like Cisco and Juniper Mist, and offer enhanced monitoring capabilities for both network administrators and survey professionals. This addition would position Cambium as a leader in delivering actionable, bi-directional RSSI insights.
