Background During recent power outages on our network, I have observed evidence that automated scanning tools on customer local networks appear to actively target CPEs during reboot cycles.
While power cycling is a common hardware recovery mechanism, having a default recovery state triggered purely by power outage patterns introduces significant security risks—particularly for critical infrastructure. While this behavior is most noticeable on legacy PMP 450 series equipment, automated network tools could easily target newer hardware generations as well.
As operators, we are increasingly required to report on supply chain and equipment vulnerabilities to government regulators. Having equipment default back to factory settings during power anomalies—without an easy way to disable this behavior in firmware—creates an unnecessary operational and security liability.
Direct Question Will Cambium Networks consider updating the firmware to allow operators to disable the power-cycle factory default routine (for instance, via a simple toggle/checkbox in the GUI/CLI)?
I previously raised this request directly with my Cambium contact, John Seaman, but was informed there were no immediate plans to change it. Given the security risks involved when deploying equipment in critical environments, having an un-disableable hard-reset power pattern is a major concern.
