How to configure Minimum Unicast Rate on Enterprise Wi-Fi APs

Summary:

The article describes on how to configure Minimum Unicast Rate on Enterprise Wi-Fi Aps through CLI, XMS Snippet, and cnMaestro User-Defined Override.

Configuring Minimum Unicast Rate has a lot of options to choose from and different ways to configure, we can push the configuration using User-Defined Override if the AP is being managed by cnMaestro or using Snippet if the AP is being managed by XMS or using CLI commands if the AP is being managed as a standalone device.

Minimum Unicast Rates –

  • It helps optimize the RF environment and assists with client roaming.
  • In 2.4Ghz Radio, default Minimum Unicast Rate is selected as 1Mbps and in 5Ghz Radio, default Minimum Unicast Rate is selected as 6Mbps.
  • Radio Modes – Selection of Minimum Unicast Rate (MBR-Minimum Basic Rate), depends upon the mode selected for the Radio.

How to configure using Snippet from XMS –

  1. Select the Profile of the APs where you want to configure and navigate to Configuration → Optimization → Snippet → and enter the commands like below, once done Save the Configuration –
    wireless radio <>
    rates min-unicast <>

In the below example I have made the Radio 1 as mode – “bg” and assigned MBR of 6Mbps and Radio 2 as mode – “ac” and assigned MBR of 12Mbps.
Please note mode command is not mandatory, I have given it as an example to select higher MBR value.

How to configure using User-Defined Override from cnMaestro –

  1. Select the AP-Group of the APs where you want to configure and navigate to Configuration → User-Defined Overrides and enter the commands like below, once done Save the Configuration –
    wireless radio <>
    rates min-unicast <>

In the below example I have made the Radio 1 as mode – “gn” and assigned MBR of 9Mbps and Radio 2 as mode – “a” and assigned MBR of 24Mbps.
Please note mode command is not mandatory, I have given it as an example to select higher MBR value.

How to configure using CLI of the AP -

  1. SSH into the AP’s CLI enter the commands like below, once done Save the Configuration –
    wireless radio <>
    rates min-unicast <>

In the below example I have assigned MBR of 2Mbps and Radio 2 assigned MBR of 6Mbps.

Troubleshooting –

  1. You could verify using “show config” command to check if the config is pushed correctly or not. Example attached below –

  1. Sometimes you would get an error like “Invalid Rate”, or “Current mode must support cck rates”. During that time, please check the mode configured on the Radios and change accordingly.

  1. To view the applied rates of a particular radio, you need to enter the below commands on the AP’s CLI –

wireless radio <>
rates show-applied

Great how to. May I ask if you could do the same for filters, like global filter and filter list.

Thanks.
