link budgets

Guys…

we use VSAT for our backbone… and currently have an 80W on one link and a 40W on the other…

the 40W packed up on us… we had a spare 5W BUC…

according to link budgets you need 4.3W to get a 256k link a 20W would give you 1MB… we were using the 40W for 2MB…

we put this little guy in… after 8 hours of reterminating and resoldering the cable, due to noice and CRC erros, poor EbNo, we managed to get the link up with an extremely high EbNo, just for kick we pushed it to 512, it was kicking so we tried 1024, still happy as larry, currenlty that 5W BUC is kicking out 2000k of data… the guys at Intelsat can’t believe it, and are shocked…

what makes it worst is that we are on the edge of the footprint… this BUC/link defies all RF theory… unless the BUC itself is faulty and kicking out more power…
