Network Indoor Unit

Hi,

With the Network Indoor Unit, it is marketed at the PTP650/670 series. Is there anything to stop this being used on a PTP820S though? Surely the IP transit is the same across both, and the NIU is just a TDM over IP device?

Hi,

The Network Indoor Unit (NIDU) is designed for use with the PTP 650/670/700 and cannot be used with other wireless links, including the PTP 820.

It's always a big challenge building a pseudo-wire TDM network over TDD wireless networks, where the delay variation is quite unlike typical packet data networks. The NIDU addresses this challenge very neatly, providing exceptionally low wander, low latency, high efficiency and easy configuration. However, to achieve these goals, we needed tight integration between the PTP 650/670/700 and the NIDU. This tight integration uses Synchronous Ethernet and IEEE 1588 between the ODUs and the NIDUs to maintain a precise delay over one hop.

Incidentally, the NIDU uses TDM over Ethernet without an IP layer, in the interests of efficiency.

We answered a few more questions about the NIDU here: ptp-nidu-faq

Hello again,

I should have mentioned that, since PTP 820 uses Frequency Division Duplex (FDD), it doesn't suffer from the characteristic packet delay variation of products in the unlicensed bands, and so PTP 820 shoud be much more suitable for use with standards-based TDM over IP mutiplexers.

Thanks Mark, info is very helpful. Makes more sense now. Cheers.
