Does anyone have any idea as to when we might see an updated database of the clutter data? I’m running into some situations where houses and other buildings have been built 3 to 4 years ago and they’re not in the clutter database. This really throws off my cnHeat maps.
So most of the LiDAR datasets that we use in cnHeat are collected by the USGS and are smaller than a single county. (Even then it is in the tens of millions of dollars to collect each dataset. It’s a monster undertaking to fly areas and process data.) After the data is flown it usually takes 18-24 months to process and QC the data that was collected before it is released to the public.
And we tend to see LiDAR updated for a given area every 5-8 years.
Unfortunately with the way that LiDAR is captured it will always be a few years out of date. With that said the quality of the clutter is still far superior to all other capture methods.
Customer - “Can you provide my household with Internet access?”
Business - “If you have no federal employees in the household we will send someone out to see if we can get service to that house typically with the intent to install but if you want just a site survey we can do that also. It looks like we have had service there before but there may have been changes such as a government employee planting an invasive species quick-growing tree to cause problems. Do you want us to schedule a time in the next week to do that?”
