PTP 450 900MHz - Radio Tx cal fail! - No Link After Swapping Out SM

Hello

Swapped out a 450 900MHz SM on a PTP link today. The SM was having issues rebooting itself and the signal had drop significantly.

After installing the new SM and uploading the previous config the link connected but the new SM did not solve the signal drop.

Unfortunately things went from bad to worse. At some point over the next hour or two the link dropped and I have not been able to reestablish.

I then tried the following:
Reset the SM to default.
Reconfigured manually.
Turned off AES on the AP and the SM.

Still no link.

Need advice.

Here is the log from the SM

The link started working last night after returning from location of AP. Have no idea why.

Link was working this morning until just a few minutes ago.

Do you have the AP set to free run?

The log only shows that the signal is so bad that it can not lock to the AP. This may be a problem with the antenna on either end or the cables. There is also a chance that you have a hardware problem.

What have you tried?

Free Run: Disabled
Sync Input: Generate Sync

I’m not sure if this is a coincidence but it seems like the link started working, slightly better then old SM, yesterday when the sun started to set and it stopped working when things started to warm up after sunrise.

I am tempted to see if that happens again tonight.

If the level of difficulty in reaching the radios was not so high I would have already swapped the old SM back.

What should I try?

If the signal works during the day but dies at evening and stays offline at night, it is a signal issue. TX power levels, alignment or RX sensitivity.

I would start with some basic troubleshooting:
Check each radio is configured properly, if you dont have a gps timing source then set to free run. Make sure you perfrom a spectrum scan from both sides and see if you have interference or a better signal propgation at a different frequency (means lots of back and forth testing unless you have a router that acts like a vpn server at the AP side). Once you eliminate the programming and frequency selection issues then its on to the physical checks. Make sure you look in the antenna connectors on both ends of the cables (if you still have those ubnt antennas then change them), any moisture is a problem, any discoloration is a problem. If you can access the antenna balun where the cable enters the radiating element, check for moisture and discoloration. If you cant access this spot due to it being sealed then skip it, KP yagi antennas have a nice threaded port to open and check, some Larsons, you just pop the plastic cover off.

Do you have a set of spare cables? If so swap them.
Cable connections should be finger tight with no cable movement once tight. If you have movement then take it apart and make sure it is aligning correctly.

Once all that has been checked, seal your connectors with electrical tape with a 30% stretch as you apply it. Work from cable to connector and come back up past where you started. Self-vulcanizing rubber tape is also suggested but only apply it in one direction and cover with a single pass of electrical tape.

Double check your alignment of antennas. Yagis have a very small cone of acceptance so down tilt is also a factor. This is not really a concern if your only a couple hundred yards (meters) away but at distance it does make a difference.
Try to keep to slant 45 configuration as this has better propagation factors than linear configurations (yes they are both technically linear configurations but slant 45 is not a traditional method).

If you are 100% sure of your setup being correct then ask what could have changed in the path and go looking. It can be a simple as a new mound of dirt 15ft high in the path.
Make sure you have adequate height on both ends.

Thanks for the reply.

I’m using KP Performance 17 dual slant yagis not the Ubiquiti yagis. I think you are thinking of @David_Thomson

It was the other way around. Link started working last night at sundown and dropped this morning.

Prior to swapping the SM the link was working with the occasional mysterious reboot along with drop in signal level, thus the reason for the swap.

After the swap no link until sundown that is.

Radios were all on the same firmware and configured identically.

Things should be the same regarding the path unless while I was swapping out the SM there was a tectonic shift resulting in the creation of a new mountain range. :upside_down_face:

SM is 60+ feet in the air AP is 25+ feet in the air. Both are difficult to access.

Used silicone tape followed up with weather rated electric tape on the connections.

The RF cables coming from the yagi had a very small black streak on the inside of the connector on the white plastic near the RF feed hole. Almost looked like a pencil mark.

I’m getting cooked working on this. The heat index is over 100 degrees and the humidity level is over 70%.

Tectonic shift by CAT excavator? Never assume the path hasnt changed.

The mark that looks like a pencil mark could be rf arcing due to trapped moisture when you assembled the connector. If it was all over then I would question how well sealed the connection was.

Rf signals are usually weaker at the end of day but come back to original levels during the night.

Is there any definite time that the signal just drops? Could be interference from another rf source too.
Have you tried swapping the radio back to the original?

@Douglas_Generous it appears the SM radio keeps resetting/rebooting itself. System uptime keeps resetting. See SM Event Log below. Was told that signal level or lack there of would not cause radio reboot.

Have not switched back to the old SM.

Have you raised a support ticket?

Signal level will NOT cause a system reboot UNLESS you set a watchdog to do just that.

Your error states that the VCO can not lock and TX settings failed.
This is a hardware issue, contact support and open a ticket.

Thanks Simon. Just opened a support ticket.
