Hi! I’m looking for a rain fade backhaul to handle about 1.5Gbps of traffic during the approximately 0.01% of the time that rain knocks out my 60GHz backhaul. My previous rain fade was AirFiber 5XHD, but it realistically tops out at about 400 Mbit due to lack of spectrum. I switched it out for MLO6, which tests radio-to-radio at 1Gbps but actually only moves about 400Mbps (and has unloaded pings up to 30ms and loaded pings in the tens of seconds.)
Someone suggested that I try a pair of ePMP 4600c’s, but I don’t know anything about Cambium gear. It appears to be 4x4, so I’m not sure what antenna to use. Are these PTP capable out of the box? Can I use 20MHz of UNII-1 paired with 160MHz of UNII-5? Is there a 2x2 version or configuration? Is there an online GUI emulator?

I know it’s impossible to make a true prediction, but if you were to make a rough guess, what do you think would be an expected throughput for a 7km link, 20MHz of UNII-1 + 160MHz of UNII-5, between a 30dB and a 34dB H/V dish? Currently, it states 11x modulation on the UNII-1 and 5x on the UNII-5.
Thanks for the help! I’m getting a surprisingly optimistic result of “100% Link Availability” and 2600 Mbit aggregate capacity. Soo, do these radios get internet connection separately to perform AFC, or do they start out at low power to initiate a connection and then turn up the power once AFC can be confirmed?
I’ve requisitioned a pair, so I’ll get a chance to play with them when they come in. I’d just love to have some heads-up what to expect.
The AP side needs an internet connection to get AFC approval to transmit at all. The station side will need internet connectivity to move from standard client to fixed client transmit power.
If you are in the US make sure you are using 36dBm as your EIRP in link planner to get accurate results, as that is what is allowed.
I assume you’re located in the USA hence why you’re asking about the 6GHz/AFC? When I plug in a 7km/4.3mi LOS path into LinkPlanner Online, using the F4600c + 2’ dishes, and 160MHz channel, I get 541mbps in either direction, or 1082mbps aggregate. Due to EIRP limitations with the 6GHz/AFC band, the figures that I’m showing in LinkPlanner seem more realistic with field experiences we’ve had.
If you’re in a region that allows for higher EIRP and can use the maximum TX power of 27dBm, you’d get almost 1gbps in either direction, or 2gbps aggregate.
Excellent. I’m in the US, so we get 36dB with AFC, and there’s basically nothing nearby this link.
My primary does 3.2Gbps, and it rain-fades only in extreme rain. Peak time usage is 1.5Gbps, and if I can get 750 or better, customers are likely to be satisfied. It sounds like it will far exceed that.
Ok, these beat the pants off of the MLO6 that they replaced. We’re gradually replacing all of our rain fade links with these. Might even play with the full 4600 at a water tower we just got a lease to.
