Background
We are evaluating the PMP450v as a transport platform for OT network deployments where high availability and network resiliency are critical requirements.
Our desired architecture is to connect two independent network switches directly to a PMP450v Access Point and Subscriber Module, allowing VLAN traffic from both switches to traverse the wireless link without requiring an external aggregation switch.
Current Limitation
Based on feedback from Cambium support, the PMP450 series only allows either the copper Ethernet interface or the SFP interface to be active at one time. This prevents:
- Simultaneous use of multiple physical uplinks.
- Direct bridging of traffic from two independent switches through the radio.
- Redundant switch connectivity without introducing additional switching infrastructure.
Requested Feature Enhancements
- Simultaneous Multi-Port Operation
- Allow the RJ45 Ethernet and SFP interfaces to be active concurrently.
- Support Layer 2 bridging of VLAN-tagged traffic between both interfaces and the wireless link.
- EtherChannel / Port-Channel Support
- Support industry-standard link aggregation technologies such as:
- IEEE 802.3ad LACP
- Static EtherChannel / Port-Channel
- Permit the radio to present multiple physical interfaces as a single logical interface.
- Support industry-standard link aggregation technologies such as:
- Switch Redundancy
- Enable dual-homed connectivity to two separate network switches.
- Support active/active or active/standby designs to improve network availability.
- Allow seamless failover if a switch, interface, or cable fails.
- OT / Industrial Network Use Cases
- Improve suitability for industrial and mining environments where redundant network paths are often mandated.
- Reduce the need for additional field switches solely to aggregate traffic before entering the wireless link.
- Simplify network architecture while maintaining resilience.
Business Benefit
Adding multi-port bridging and EtherChannel/Port-Channel functionality would significantly increase the PMP450v’s applicability in critical infrastructure and industrial OT networks by providing:
- Increased network resilience.
- Reduced infrastructure costs.
- Simpler deployment architectures.
- Better alignment with common enterprise and industrial networking practices.
This enhancement would make the PMP450v a more attractive solution for high-availability wireless backhaul and access deployments where redundant switch connectivity is required.
