So I’ve had my 2 dns servers listed in the ethernet portion of the network config which works just fine, but I’d like to change it to auto and pass on what it receives from the dhcp client side of the wan. Is this possible? If I set them to blank, there is no dns being issued at all.
I don’t think there’s a way to have the LAN DHCP clients get assigned the WAN learned name servers, but the behavior of leaving the Ethernet name servers blank should functionally be very similar to what you’re looking for. If you leave the Ethernet name severs blank the DHCP clients will be assigned a name server of the LAN address of the SM. The SM acts as a small caching name server itself and will use the name servers it learns from the WAN side as forwarders. We’ve run SMs this way for years and have never had an issue. I’m not sure why your client isn’t being assigned a name server, I’ve never seen such a thing and we have hundreds of SMs running this way.
Ok thanks you are correct! In my testing I was looking at a remote module and saw no DNS listed on the ethernet port and just assumed it wasn’t giving one out. Tried again on a test bench and it does hand out the router IP as the DNS so I should be good to go. Thanks again!
