I am setting up a v5000 DN on a LAN that will only have two client nodes. Should this DN be configured as a POP node? Under what circumstances should I choose to make a DN a POP node vs not?
Jason,
A DN should be a POP node when it is the gateway to the network from the CN’s perspective. Small networks need to have 1 DN as a POP - the DN that has a physical connection to the network. When you have more than one DN with a physical connection to the network, you can have multiple POP’s on a network - I have customers who are serving whole communities with cnWave, and have multiple POP’s.
The CN or DN that is connected to a client computer or network forms a tunnel between the CN/DN and the POP. Open R routing maintains this tunnel trying for the lowest metric for the link to reach the POP. Even in a PTP (bridge in a box 1G (v1000) or 2G(v2000) for example), the local terminal is configured as a POP, and the remote terminal as a connection node.
Hope this helps.
Hi Jason,
- The Point of Presence Distribution Node (PoP DN) connects to the backhaul network and is responsible for routing traffic between the cnWave mesh network and the external (core) network.
- In summary, a DN (Distribution Node) qualifies as a PoP DN if it has a direct connection to the backhaul network.
