Why is older software version always recommended on cnMaestro Cloud?

I’ve noticed that in cnMaestro Cloud, older versions of software than what is available are always recommended. For example, on the ePMP Force 4525, it recommends version only 5.9.0, when 5.10.4 is available. I noticed people talking about 5.11 resolving issues with having to reboot devices, but 5.11 hasn’t even been released yet.

When I deploy devices, I’ve usually been installing the latest stable release. This has many of our devices running software versions above the version recommended by cnMaestro. For best performance, is it best to check cnMaestro and go with the recommended version, or go with the latest stable release? I rarely, if ever, use release candidate versions.

It seems like every few months someone asks this question… and the answer is not straightforward. It’s a combination of factors that depend on the platform, whether or not new devices have recently been added that might have their own release firmware, major features being introduced, how long a version has been out and how many devices it’s deployed on (soak time), and lastly how frequently the dev teams coordinate with the cnMaestro team to actually tell them to promote an image as “recommended”.

In the case of ePMP, I’d highly recommend running 5.10.4.

Typically, we’ll run the newest available firmware for every platform.
