BH20 look great, unexplained wireless drops, blame police?

Hello folks,

It’s been a while since I visited. How are you all?!

I have a problem that is escalating. my backhaul is dropping?

2 BH205200 running 8.2.2. 2.3 miles away. Average load 6Mbit down, 2 up

master 1220, -63 Jitter 1 most all the time. I have an occasional 8, then back to 1
slave 1310, -61, Jitter 2 most all the time

The stats show a lot of overruns but pings under load look great (2-4ms). But after about 5 minutes, the radio link drops, and takes about 45 seconds to reestablish. interestingly, it does not show up as a re-reg.

I scanned 5.2 spectrum, and picked the most open freqs. A buddy of mine in two-way radio suggested a possible interfering microwave from the state highway patrol, and suggests that when they are under load, they could be cutting my connection.

Your thoughts are appreciated.

what region do you have it set to? You can try changing it to other and seeing if that resolves the problem. That would at least put you on the right track to resolving the issue.

Yes, is this a new radio (with radar avoidance DFS)?

hi,

Radios are new P10, and set to United States. Oddly, my reg count is high, but re-reg count is zero

What band are you using?

Try setting it to region code:other and see if that corrects the issue. It at least will point you in the right direction.

hi. changed to other. What am I looking for? What does this do? symptoms are the same.

Cheers

Have you done a spectrum analysis at both ends?

hello,

I have, and 5325 and 5275 are definitely the clearest. I get the same results on either freq.

post the logfiles

will do. I reestablished the wireless connection, cleared the logs, I’ll post after about 8hrs.

These two things would have me suggest the radio is crashing or loosing power. Keep track of the uptime in the radios to see if this could be the issue.

etc… carries on several pages

The slave looks almost identical. same uptime, basicallt empty log. I have tried all sorts of variations, including swapping the master/slave role, GPS synch/generating synch, different freqs (at least eight), with and w/o scheduled whitening, with w/o 2X mode.

I have tried lowering the power from 5 to 0.

I am at a loss!

P9 or P10?

Board Type : P10

There were some known problems with P10 boards.

Contact moto support with the issue and MAC addresses of the radios to see if they fall into the automatic RMA category.

OK, called support. They have no idea what I am talking about regarding a bad P10 series. Do you know of any specific problems? Any papers on it?

Cheers

That’ BS.

There were issues with part of the glue process direct from Moto
Engineering.

Perhaps it does not apply in this situation but the problem existed.

What did they say about the re-range problem?

they have asked for a complete network map, including frequencies and co-locations of all my gear. Geesh. working on that now.

They did mention that if I upgraded from 8.1.5 to 8.2.2 that might be the problem. I just can’t remember if it was 8.1.51 or not, and apparently that can make a difference.

I am thinking of dropping these backhauls in favor of Mikrotiks. I am currently using nstreme2 to backhaul a ds3 at full duplex to my primary tower. It has just been outstanding, average 33mbit full duplex on my TCP tests (both directions at the same time), with pings at 2-4ms under load. These BH20s were meant to then link two other towers from the primary, But I may just turn them to face out of town for future links, instead of across town, because perhaps something is conflicting that is not showing up on the SSA.

so I decided to email support as well. They are being their usual unhelpful, rude selves. Why do we all put up with this?

Anyways Jerry, here is their email response regarding the P10s:

“There is no database of “bad” P10s. If we knew that we had bad boards and we knew what their MAC were we would recall them.”

problem persists.

I have mounted a new CMM directly on the tower. That saved us 30 feet of cable per unit. I also shortened the GPS to 8 feet, instead of forty. I am still getting 10 sats. I upgraded to 8.2.4. I fixed the speeds on my Cisco catalyst on the slave side.

Things are looking better. The rerange errors are only about 1/hr now. Hardly noticeable to most people, but still ridiculous in my eyes. My attempts at getting support via email and phone have been disappointing and futile.

On a tip from Jerry, I downloaded the version 8 manual. 500+ pages! I have been reading it persistently over the last week, and I must say, after doing this for 5 years, I am saying “Oh Yeah!” quite a bit. Highly recommended, even if you THINK you don’t have time.

But still, my backhauls suck. Any more ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers all
