I'm pretty sure that this can be done using WDS repeater mode. See THIS post for information.

Mesh connectivity feature is not supported in between E-Series and R-Series platform.

R-Series can be connected with E-Series in Non-WDS mode/repeater(AP-Station) mode. Please refer below KB documents.
